  • Practical-oriented studies

Research-Oriented Studies

Universities offering research-oriented learning (WO) are often considered to select the high scores achieving students in the country. They aim to develop analytical thinking of their students, consider the concepts of abstract and ask questions. The teachers do not have to efforts much, as the study results require pupil’s self-initiative, efforts, and their discipline. 

The pace of teaching is rapid, so students themselves need to process the information quickly.  The graduates from such universities have career paths like management, administration and policies, and research. Students are granted with “Bachelor’s Degree” after the completion, the professions are generally not very strict. 

Practical-Oriented Studies

An alternative is “Practical-Oriented Learning”, (HBO) where training is more focused. The occupational path is more clear in these educational institutions for their students which ofter lead to white-collar jobs. The teaching approach is at a slower pace, more group work and greater supervision. 

HBO universities encourage their students to utilize their knowledge in practical terms of solution. The studies of HBO universities are generally science-oriented or technology-oriented, therefore, their degree might be called Ingenieur​​, which means Engineer.

Cycles of Higher Education

  • In WO universities, the Bachelor’s degree program lasts for three years, includes; Bachelor of Arts, Science, and Laws. Whereas in HBO universities Bachelor’s lasts for four years and the graduates might be called Ingenieur. Internship is mandatory for graduation.
  • Bachelor’s from WO universities is then followed by a Master’s Degree program that takes one-three years, the options for Master’s are suggested by WO universities.
  • Ph.D. degree generally lasts for 4-5 years.

Student Visa Process

The EU students do not have to apply for a visa if they studied from an approved educational institution for more than 3 month period and if they can financially support themselves. However, students outside of EU countries, need to “apply for a student visa” for which they require; 

  • Payment of tuition fee (for full degree students only) and the visa application fee.
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Antecedent certificate
  • A copy of passport 
  • TB declaration. If a student’s nationality is not on ​the Tuberculosis exemption list,​ then he/she needs to take a Tuberculosis test in the Netherlands.
  • Nuffic certificate (only for Chinese nationals).

Foreign Student Accommodation in Rotterdam
